  • Reviewed Client’s business processes and systems as documented at their corporate headquarters.

  • Assisted in the preparation of a report on the findings and suggestions bearing in mind the corporation’s strategic plan for their Project Controls group.

    • Division of responsibilities on the hand-over from the construction group to the sustaining group became fraught. I set up and facilitated meetings, processes to achieve a smooth transition

  • Most interesting assignment – having been one of the Business Process advisors to the software programmers designing the new system, it became my responsibility to manage the first ever (in the World) deployment of the system on a live project
  • It was successfully implemented on a fast track Process Tool Installation project of ~$150M. The biggest challenge was that I couldn’t find fault with the software package – as I had been part of the development team. Nor could I fault the deployment team as I was leading the effort. There was only one choice and that was success
  • At time of this up date there is now in excess of $2B of all types of construction worldwide being tracked in this system

  • The assignment consisted of 3 week long visits to locations in China, Malaysia & Philippines.

  • Joined a leading US Multi National’s construction finance group chartered with writing up their Business requirements for large international construction projects.
  • Working with 3rd party software company using these requirements to configure a world wide, multi currency, scalable, cost managing system that will integrate with the Multi National’s existing system of record.

  • TACA was called upon to assist a major Multi National client assess and test new computer software to support their Project Controls group responsible for $ Billion plus international construction.
  • Such a system had to be capable of working in the US and Offshore as well as be able to support multi-currencies, multi languages.
  • A set of criteria was established and a number of systems were judged against – with a final recommendation.

Coaching and mentoring (Europe)

For a leading Semi-conductor Manufacturer

  • One of the world’s leading semi-conductor manufactures Corporate Services group needed support when a number of Finance Managers were drafted onto an $800M+ construction project. My task was to assist them to come up to speed with the project’s systems and processes within a 12 week period.
  • This was successfully achieved in no small part due to the intelligence of the individuals concerned. In addition, on completion of the assignment I presented the Clients Project Controls Manager with a CD-ROM containing all the coaching and mentoring aids that I developed in the 12 weeks.

Project controls manager (Europe)

For a leading Semi-conductor Manufacturer

  • Performed a ‘classic’ TACA service for one of the World’s leading semi-conductor manufactures Corporate Services group by acting as the Project Controls Manager for a $500M+ project in Western Europe (The permanent Project Control Manager not being available for a couple of months).
  • I assisted in the setting up of the Control Processes and Systems whilst at the same time participating in numerous Alignment & Training sessions with Designers, Construction Managers, General Contractors and Client’s in-house customer groups.
  • Successfully got the commercial aspects of the project started and got the initial Cost Reporting and forecasting functions up and working.
  • Was in this role for 7 months during which time I also partook in the recruitment of the Project Controls team such that when the permanent Project Controls Manager arrived he had a Processes, Systems and a team in place.

Time and material guidelines

Major Hi-Tech MNC

  • Requested by the company to gather Best Known Methods from a cross discipline team and define various compensation strategies and the minimum guidelines for the management of Project Scope that will be executed on a Time and Materials basis.

Bid / evaluate / award

Installation of Process Equipment

  • Assist with the bid evaluation and award of small contracts associated with the installation of Process Equipment – total of all contacts less than $5M.
  • Classic use of TACA’s resource to support an already stretched and young team with this exercise. Populated the bid evaluation models, ran different Indirect scenarios, participated in Indirects final negotiations. All contracts awarded on time and within budget.
  • Developed a more streamline payment process, in addition to how to handle the tracking and accounting of surplus materials.

Change contract strategy

When 75% Complete

  • Large multi-national client 75% through a major Capital Project wished to change the management of the Project. In essence they wished to de-scope the remaining 25% from the Construction Manager and contract the remainder of the project directly with the trade contractors.
  • Assignment was to assist the on-site team who were still engaged with the Close Out of the original contract (75%) while at the same time bidding / evaluating / awarding the remainder as a total new stand alone project. It was essential that this revision to the contracting strategy be as seamless as possible to the Corporation’s Senior Management

Design costs

What will design cost?

  • Asked to join an existing Project Finance team in the middle of a large Process Equipment installation project ($200M+). The assignment was to forecast the final cost of the Design.
  • Difficult and complex contracting relationships had evolved thereby making true costs less than transparent and difficult to forecast.
  • A perfect example of where an outside resource could be deployed to tackle a particular problem while not distracting the already heavily committed Finance Team.
